Stoma Care

At Heart Safe Clinical Academy, our Stoma Care Training course is designed to equip healthcare professionals with the essential skills and knowledge required to provide high-quality care to patients with stomas. This comprehensive 3-hour course covers the fundamentals of stoma types, including colostomies, ileostomies, and urostomies, and offers practical guidance on assessing stoma sites, managing pouching systems, and addressing common complications such as leakage, prolapse, and skin irritation. Participants will learn best practices for stoma care, as well as effective strategies for patient education and emotional support. With an emphasis on both physical and psychosocial aspects of stoma management, this course will enable healthcare providers to confidently support their patients and improve their overall quality of life.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify different types of stomas and their indications (colostomy, ileostomy, urostomy).

  2. Understand the anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal and urinary systems relevant to stoma care.

  3. Assess a patient’s stoma site, identifying potential complications such as leakage, skin irritation, and prolapse.

  4. Implement effective management strategies for stoma care, including pouching systems, skin protection, and patient education.

  5. Recognize common complications associated with stomas and demonstrate appropriate intervention strategies.

  6. Provide psychological and emotional support to patients with a new or permanent stoma.

  7. Document stoma care management and treatment plans according to best practice guidelines.
